LAND OFFICER.

MR. D. SMITH RETIRING.

LONG PUBLIC SERVICE

After nearly 44 years in the Public Service, Mr. David Smith, dcputy-Com-intasioner of Crown Lands, Xorth Auckland, will retire on December 31. Mr. Smith joined the Lands and Survey Department in Dunedin in 1894, and has served in the Wellington, Auckland, Invercargill and Xorth Auckland offices.

During the war years he was Command Paymaster in the Defence Department, with the rank of captain.

Mr. Smith has been stationed in Auckland since 1921 as chief clerk, receiver of land revenue and secretary to the North Auckland Land Board. He has been returning officer for the Manukau electoral district since 1925.

Intimately connected with the cutting up and sale'of the Orakei garden suburb, Mr. Smith, who is an efficient and popular officer, was appointed by the Land Board to conduct the auction of the sections. The first sale was held in the Auckland Town Hall in 1928, and was one of the largest auctions of town sections in the city. In his younger days Mr. Smith took great interest in hockey, and was one of the first to form a hockey club in the Auckland district. Of late years he has been interested in bowling." Mr. Smith intends to remain in Auckland.
