NEW BLOCK.

UNIVERSITY BUILDING. LAYING FOUNDATION* STOXE. The Minister of Education, the Hon. PyFraser. will lay the foundation stone of the new biology block of the Auckland University College on December 13, according to information received by the college council yesterday. The architect. Mr. R. A. Lippincott. reported that the construction of the new block was proceeding satisfactorily. though rather more elowly than lie could have wished because of the ecarcity of car|>enters and steel workers. "It eeems rather tragic that such work should be held up because we cannot provide the equipment." eaid the president. Mr. H. J. D. Mahon. when Dr. K. R. Bullen. lecturer in mathematics, applied for a calculating machine. Dr. Bullen stated that )ii« researches in earthquakes were severely handicapped by t,he lack of the machine, which would cost £8.1. He thought that perhap* the Government might make a special grant as the research had a liearing on a problem in Xew Zealand.

The council decided to apply to the Government for a grant.

The council spent considerable time on a report by Professor H. Belehaw of his activities on sabbatical leave. Among hi* recommendations was the more effective use of wireless as a method of adult education, and the council decided to refer the matter to the University Extension Lecture* Committee to approach the Director of Broadcasting, Professor James Shelley, to further this aim.

An extensive report was also presented by the chairman of the lectures extension committee. Professor C O. Cooper, who recommended that the eeheme in future be administered by a director of such work at a salary of £100. to be assisted by a committee elected from within the college. He also recommended that centres wishing the lectures should be required to contribute towards the cost of the scheme.

It wae stated that next year 50 lectures could be piven in Auckland and the province at a cost of £200. Last vear'a activities coet £18.

The Duffue Lubeeki scholarship for science for 1038 was awarded to Mr. L. H. Millener, while the W.K.A. bursary for the year was von by Miss M. Godfrey.
