SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

WELLINGTON, this day

Centred in the southern part of Hawke's Bay, an ' earthquake occurring shortly before 2.30 yesterday afternoon, was felt right across the North Island as far west as Wanganui. At Waipawa and Hastings the intensity on the Rossi Forel scale was estimated at six, Napier felt the 'quake rather less severely, and Taihape and Wanganui considerably i less.

In Hawke's Bay the 'shake was rather alarming, but practically no damage appears to have been done beyond the cracking of some chimneys. At 4.20 this morning a disturbance of lesser intensity took place in the same ares.
