TOUR OF ORIENT.
ENTOMOLOGIST'S VISIT.
SPECIMENS FOR MUSEUM. After an extensive tour of the Orient Mr. \V. H. Hemingway, honorary entomologist of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, has returned with a large numl>er of specimens. He has collected in 41 countries in the past 40 years, and has donated l>ooo specimens to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, although only 2000 have Wen exhibited for display. Mr. Hemingway's tour took him to Japan, the Philippines. China, CochinChina. Cambodia and Siam. He left Shanghai three days before the outbreak of fighting between the Japanese and Chinese.
In Cambodia Mr. Hemingway secured 00 specimens of large and beautiful tropical butterflies which will be added to the display of insects at the museum. He continued collecting in Sumatra, Malaya and Java, and secured many fine exhibits of insects and land shells.
During his tour Mr. Hemingway visited 22 museums, and he is of the opinion that no museum building is as jrood as the Auckland War Memorial Museum building. He is also of the opinion that tire arrangement of exhibits by the Auckland director, Mr. Gilbert Archey, is superior to that in any other place. In Auckland admission is free, whereas at some of the museums he visited a charge is made for admission.
Mr. Hemingway considers that Aucklanders when abroad should look out for suitable exhibits to add to the display in Auckland. He is now engaged at the museum arranging and classifying the many new , specimens which he 'has brought to Auckland.
