FARMERS WORRIED.
CONTINUED DRY SPELL.
DAIRY Sri'PUF.RS AFFECTED
(By Telegraph. —Own Corrcspnnd-nt.) CHRISTC'HURCH. this day. Continuation of the present dry weather will, it is feared, seriously diminish the output of dairy produce in Canterbury. Lack of rain is already being felt severely in other parts of the South Island. The manager of one of the principal dairy factories ill ('hri*tchurch said this morning that the supplies that came in earlier in the reason were so plentiful that it seemed certain Canterbury's out put of dairy produce would exceed by a considerable margin that of last year. This hope was. however, already fadinfr, owing to the long-continued spell of dry weather. .Supplies were still pood, but were not keeping up to expectations. Marlborough and parts of Southland were, he said, already siilTei ing a drought; lack of rain seemed to l>c general throughout the South Island. Kven in the foothills, where the rainfall was usually more than on the plains, only light showers had fallen, and these had had little effect, as the ground was quickly dried by the strong winds. One «<f the" results 'of the dry weather was. he said, to make the grass seed much earlier than usual. "We need 48 to 60 hours of steady, soaking rain within the next week to save a serious diminution of the dairy output,'' he said.
