EPSOM-OAK WOMEN.
MATERNITY QUESTIONNAIRE. Women members of the Epsom-Oak branch of the Labour party met on Saturday afternoon at the branch's rooms, Royal Oak, for a social and discussion afternoon. The secretary of the branch, Mrs. Mere Newton, J.P., presided. Several enjoyable songs were sung'by Mrs. R. H. Killip, and the hostesses for the afternoon were the ladies of the social committee, Mesdames Booth, Gibson and Harris. Mrs. H. Hurst gave a short talk by request on Maori unemployment relief provisions, and said that it was the feeling of many of the Maori women that universal motherhood endowment would benefit the Maori families and communities. In the view of many social workers, she said, the coupon or any other system by which workers or relief recipients are paid in orders instead of in money was open to abuse in actual practice, "and people who did not ever handle money could not be helped to learn the value of it. The report of the special committee which was set up by the branch to consider and formulate answers to the recent questionnaire sent out by the Health Department relative to maternity services was discussed with considerable interest, a number of speakers out- : lining their experiences and views based j on them. i
