"GET STEAM UP."
ORDER FOR MAY 10.
KING'S WHARF STATION.
EXTRA CORONATION DEMAND.
The Auckland Electric Power Board's steam plant at the King's wharf will be brought into operation on May 10. in order to relieve the greatly increased demand on Arapuni occasioned by the normal heavier winter demand and also the Coronation week electrical displays. The station will remain in operation for a month or six weeks, or such period as circumstances warrant. Advice to this effect was given to the "Star" by telephone this morning by the district electrical engineer for the Waikato electric supply. It was stated by the Auckland Electric Power Board that the necessary steam could be raised at a few -hours' notice.
The Arapuni hydro-electric power station is working to full capacity, the demand being at least 10,000 kilowatts greater than last year's peak. Boch the Mangahao and Waikaremoana hydro-electric stations are working to capacity, according to an official statement, and the demand on Arapuni is such that there is at present very little margin for further output.
Two new units are being installed at Arapuni, but it will be a month or six weeks before the first of them will be ready for use, when the services of the King's wharf station will not be needed.
