DECREASE SHOWN.
BUILDING AT WHANGAREI.
EFFVC'T OF STATE HOUSES.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this dav.
Less building was done in Whangarei during the financial year ended March 31 last than during the previous year. The comparative figures, those for 1935-36 being shown in parentheses, are: New dwellings, 31 (37); value, £23,752 (£20,700); other buildings, 13 (10); £19,841 (£20,878) ; additions and alterations, 69 (71); £3697 (£8147). The grand totals are:—l 936-37, 47,290; 193536; £55,725. The construction of no less than 11 large buildings during the latter part of 1937 is under consideration. The drop in the value of buildings is attributed to two reasons: (1) The higher costs of materials and labour; (2) people with money to invest in buildings were holding out to see what competition they were likely to meet from the Government housing scheme. Point to this latter statement is given by the fact that during the last four months only four permits for residential dwellings have been issued, despite the acute housing shortage in Whangarei.
