NEW LYNN BOROUGH.

The ordinary meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided, other members present being Messrs. A. T. Jeffrey, Geo. Severne, A. Woollej, S. Hards, F. Carter and C. Drury.

Road Works.—The engineer submitted a comprehensive report covering works carried out during the past year, consistent with the council's policy of reconstruction and tar-sealing of the road and footpath surfaces as far as the council's finances would permit. These operations would be continued teach year, eventually bringing to all ratepayers greater facilities of travelling both by vehicle and foot in comfort. The schedule of works authorised had not been completed owing to the extraordinary weather conditions operating during the summer months, but the programme would be completed by the end of April. During the year the Main Highways Board assumed the whole responsibility- of maintaining the Great North Road, and while the saving thus effected was too late to be very effective in this year, a noticeable difference would be evident in next year's estimates. Approximately three miles of permanent work had been completed this year, and with the maintenance thus saved it would be possible to cover a greater area next year. The stone crushing arrangements were working satisfactory and the council had a good stock of kerbs and pipes on hand "produced by council employees. • General supplies to municipalities' had advanced 35 per cent, while wages had risen 25 per cent.

Community Lighting.—The town clerk reported that practically all the business men in the borough had signed up for the system of community lighting, and an early installation was anticipated.

Housing.—The council held a special meeting re the housing question. Nothing definite Was arrived at pending further investigations aa to building costs and the policy of the Government.
