ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting o£ the Onehunga Borough Council last night was presided over hy the Mayor, Mr. J t . ParkAlleged Nuisance—ln reply lav complaints received by the Medical Officer of Health, from residents in Beach Road with regard to a lime kiln in the vicinity, the owners said they regretted the occasional complaints, and were prepared to consider the removal of the plant.- If the removal was agreed to, they said, no doubt the council would bear the expense. Members smiled when the last clause was read, and decided to invite the proprietors of the kiln to a conference on the subject. Sick Pay.—lt was resolved: "That in future all applications from any of the council's employees for sick leave pr sick pay should be considered individually, and dealt with by the council on their merits. Private Crossings.—On the recommendation of the borough engineer, Mr. H. R. Bach, it was resolved that, in view of the extra cost of forming private crossings, the charge be increased to £6 for continuous concrete crossings, and £4 each for concrete strips and sealed crossings for 18ft wide footpaths.
',- Housing Survey.—For the purpose of the housing survey, the whole borough is to 'be zoned, and a full report made on those j houses only a slum type.
Fpreshore, Leases.—lt *is to be a condition, precedent -to the renewal of all foreshore, leases, that the occupiers agree to "a reservation by the council of a right to determine the tenancy at any time, on giving one month's notice, in which event the tenant may remove his improvements. Adjustable Debts.—A report by Mr. A. A. Coates was adopted to the effect that no" protection was given to local bodies, under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, 1936, which prohibits the commencement of - proceedings for the recovery of adjustable debts', including rates. It was pointed out that the essential time for the recovery of rates was the date, of commencing judgment and not the period within which proceedings had been commenced. Subsidy Works.—Thirty-nine men are engaged at tin* Waikaraka development scheme, eleven at Frederick Street, and four at Hillsboro' Cemetery, all on fulltime shbsidy work. .Cartage Rates.—The council approved the action of the engineer-in agreeing to increase the payment for the cartage of scoria from 1/9 per cubic yard to 2/3 for the borough, and 2/9 to Hillsboro' Cemetery. Coronation Celebrations.—The pumping engineer is to submit a scheme for illuminating the municipal buildings on the occasion of. the Coronation celebrations in May. SteUg: are to be taken to decorate the Seddo/i Memorial, and the business people are to be asked to co-operate in decorating their properties.
Rates.—The town clerk reported that 81 per cent of the rates struck had been collected up to March 15.
Clean-up Week. —The town clerk and the engineer are to. arrange for a clean-up week in the .borough at a cost of £20, the contractor for the removal of refuse having agreed to do the work for that sum.
