MOUNT ROSKILL ROAO BOARD
A meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held last night, Mr. C. M. Mcl'ullough presiding. Warrant of Fitness.—The board decided to issue warrant* of fitne.su lor its own vehicle*, provided it* garage is approved by the Transport Board's inspec tor. I'lopased Loan.—The board revolved to apply to the Local Government Loans hoard for permwsion to borrow tile sum oi £2200 with tlie object of providing newer drainage to a special rating area in the district. Employee*' Benefits.—On the recommendation of the finance committee the board decided that, having regard to the responsibility for the maintenance of the board * motor fleet carried by the board's motor mechanic, and the utilisation of hi* extensive range of valuable tool*, he be paid £5 5/ for a week of 47 hours from .February 1 last. Owing to the frequent u*e made by the foreman of work* of his I own car in district inspections, etc., lie jis to be given lour new tyre* for his car as they are required. Annual leave is to be granted to the board'* staff for period* as arranged by the clerk to suit the convenience of the board'* business. Scoria Royalty. In reference to exchange ol areas and metal reserve lease with the Lands and Survey .Department, a royalty of 2d per cubic yard for scoria gained was agreed to. Sanitation Service.—A joint report by the foreman ot work* and inspector is to be prepared on the proposal th.it the board conduct a special sanitation service over an unsewered area iu the Winstone I Park estate. It was pointed out that the service would only be » a partial one, numerous septic tank installation* existing on the estate.
Subsidy Labour.—The work* committee reported that the time limit oi the authority had prevented the completion oi all the scheduled concrete footpaths with HiiUudy labour. The board Kill make a fresh application for a new authority, anil to include therein the balance of footpatlis unfinished, and others which the board resolved upon. Such application not to bind the boaid to definitely include all the paths in the 1937 programme of woi ks Water Main.—According to the report of the committee the 4-inch main in Kingswood Terrace is only serving the bathing sheds at present, and that there is little likelihood of greater use being made of the main for some tiiiie. It was resolved that any proposal •for ite removal and use elsewhere should be placed in the hands of the waterworks and works committee jointly. In the meantime the foreman i* to keep this length of main under inspection for possible corrosion. By-election.—An election to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr. <J.- R. Robertson, a member of the board, will be held next Friday. Four candidates were nominated for the vacancy, but one, Mr. Rugg, has retired from the contest. Next Meeting.—ln view of the probable absence of the chairman at the Municipal Conference 0:1 March 9, and the desirability of a full attendance of the board on the occasion of the introduction of a new board member, it was decided to postpone the next meeting for a week and meet on March 16 instead of March 9.
PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD. The Papatoetoe Town Board met last evening, the chairman, Mr. YV. J. Nicholson, presiding. Cyclists on Footpaths.—Following a complaint regarding the practice of cyclists riding on the footpath, the matter was investigated by the local traffic inspector, who reported that he found that the chief offenders were juveniles, and that the practice was more prevalent at the present time owing to the school holidays. The report was received. Reduction in Fire Insurance Premiums.—At a previous meeting of the board, a letter was received from the Auckland Fire and Accident Underwriters' Association, which stated that providing a system of coloured lights be installed on a high pole at the fire station 10 indicate the location of the fire, it had been decided to grant "D" classification to the business area of the district. The estimated cost of the pole to be erected on the rear gab'.e of the town hall, together with the cost of telephone installation deposit, was £&> 5/. The chairman stated that it was a matter which should certainly be undertaken, but that it should be again referred to the fire brigade committee for report on the suitability of the tower and whether its installation would benefit the ratepayers as a whole. The board decided to act on the lines suggested by the chairman. Lighting of Rubbish Fires.—A complaint wag received from a resident regarding the lighting of rubbish fires in the vicinity. The board decided to refer the matter to i tne fire inspector for investigation.
