AVONDALE WOMEN'S CLUB.

The Avondale Women's Club held its, annual meeting on Tuesday afternoon, in the Blockhouse Bay Ilall. Mrs. Tliom i presided over a fair attendance of members. Before commencing business, Mrs. Thorn made reference to the death of a member, Mrs. Binsted, and members stood in silence as an expression of sympathy with her daughter. Mrs. Bollard, and with Mrs. Kealey, who has also recently suffered l»ereaveiuent. The annual report was read by the secretary, Mrs. Hedges, and the treasurer's report was presented by Mrs. (Jill. The club was shown to be in a healthy state both numerically and linancially. and to have worked for progress in the district, and, through affiliation with the National Council of Women, for much-needed social reforms. On the motion of Miss Newton, Mrs. Hedges and Mrs. Gill were congratulated and warmly thanked by acclamation for their very satisfactory reports. The election of officers resulted as follows:— President, Mrs. Thorn; vice-presidents, Mesdames Oxenharn and Kealey; hon. secretary, Mrs. Hedges; hon. treasurer, Mrs. Gill; committee, Mesdames Browne, Whale. Lupton, Kigden, Blumenthal, Karland and Skelton; newspa]>er correspondent. Mrs. Abercrombie; hon. auditor, Mr. Kgerton Gill. Miss Newton and Mis* Ingrain were appointed honorary vice-presidents for life in recognition of their valuable services to the club. At the general meeting which followed, a letter was reid from Mrs. Metcalfe, regretfully tendering her resignation, as she has moved from the district. On the motion of Mrs. Thom, seconded by Miss Newton, the meeting placed on record deep regret at the lose of Mrs. Metcalfe a member, and appreciation of her very valuable services as committee member and newspaper correspondent, and extended to her very best wishes for the future. Members expressed astonishment and regret at the reply received by the council from the Minister re the appointment of women police, and stressed the line work being done by thein in other countries, notably Great Britain, where the number has recently been increased. The secretary read extracts from the monthly summary of the League of Nations Union, of which the club is a corporate member, and those present were urged to use their influence to increase the membership. Afternoon tea and social chat brought the meeting i to a close.
