ILLS OF LIVE STOCK.

PRAISE FOR N.Z. RESEARCH. "A NATIONAL INVESTMENT." "This visit-to New Zealand confirms the impression I had gained from previous visits that the live stock industries form the economic base on which stands the prosperity of the Dominion," said Professor J. Douglas Stewart, dean of the faculty of veterinary science of the University of Sydney, in an interview with the "Dominion" before he left on his return to Australia by the Awatea. Professor Stewart, who was accompanied by Mrs. Stewart, attended the recent science congress at Auckland and later investigated agricultural research methods in the North Island. j "The Government is to be congratulated on its determination to take full advantage of scientific endeavour in encouraging the development of these great primary industries," said Professor Stewart. "This is being carried out not only by controlling disease, the annual toll of which is still very great, but by advancing production not so much in quantity as in quality by improved methods of breeding and feeding. "In New Zealand you have many educational institutions, both scientific and technical, and the field of application for fuller and better knowledge is so extensive that any expenditure incurred in the development of these institutions can only be regarded as a sound national investment."
