CITY EN FETE.

ANNIVERSARY DAY.

TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME.

ALMOST GENERAL HOLIDAY

The anniversary of Auckland's foundation, which will be observed to-mor-row, will be celebrated in traditional manner with a regatta on the harbour and with a wide variety of sports and other holiday attractions. The day will be observed by mo.st shops as a holiday, though the position under a number of awards leaves the question open. The late shopping night will, however, be this evening, and it is d-.-finite that banks, many offices and factories will be closed to-morrow.

As a day which traditionally calls for 1 open-air activity its success cmlls for: fine weather, and though reports indi- ! cate that stormy conditions are brewing, organisers of the various sports carnivals are pinning their faith to Auckland's Anniversary Day tradition of good weather. A record total of 304 entries has been received for the regatta and the scene on the harbour should be an even more impressive one than is usual. In addition to this major attraction, racing will be provided at Kllerslie by the Takapuna Jockey Club in the first day of its summer meeting; the Auckland Cricket Association will conduct a full series of senior matches at North Shore and Kden Park cricket grounds: the semi-finals of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's championships will be played'at the Stanley Street courts; there will be tournaments at a number of city and suburban bowling clubs; and at Penrose the Auckland Rifle Association will conduct a championship meeting. j

Variety of Interests.

Further variety' will be provided at various sports meetings throughout the province. A feature amongst these will be the running of the New Zealand Tourist Trophy race, the most important motor cycling event of the Dominion, on Waiheke Island. Athletic and cycling meetings are also advertised to take place at various district centres throughout the province, and in addition there will be the attraction of picnicking at various resorts about the city, with the rail, sea and road transport arrangements fully organised.

The Railway Department has made special arrangements to meet the expected rush of passengers to the centres of sporting and other interests. Special trains will run .to Hamilton for the annual regatta on the Waikato River, and an excursion train will also be run to Helensville for those who wish to attend the Agricultural and Pastoral Show in that centre. The Te Kuiti Aero Club's pageant is al<M) expected to attract good attendance. In the city in the evening theatres and cabarets will offer a selection of attractions.

The observance of the holiday is' covered in the awards governing the working conditions in the various industries. Those who are bound to clo*e include those covered by the grocers, butchers, hardware and general shop assistants awards, but it is unlikely that many retail establishment* will remain open. The Factories Act does not recognise Anniversary Dav as a holiday, and in these as in other cases not bound by awards the question is a matter of arrangement.
