OYSTER PICKING.
DISPUTE TTNSETTIJED.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
INA'ERCARGILL, Wednesday
With the opening of the oyster season only a few days away the*dispute between the employers and employees, which has not yet been settled, is causing concern. The dispute, which relates to liack pay, alleged by the men to be due, and involving a considerable sum, has been referred to the Labour Department. Employees In the oyster fishing industry are paid a set rate for each thousand oystere caught. The employers claim that this arrangement puts the men in the category of contractors —not covered by the new legislation, as not being on! wages. The employees claim that thei rate of payment make's them piece-! workers and that they are thus entitled to back pay. An employer to-night said the whole dispute was a matter of conflicting viewpoints on interpretation of the law. The referring of the trouble to the Labour Department was in the nature of a request for a ruling. It was natural that neither side would make any move until the application of the law to the industry had been fully explained.
