DOMINION BUTTER.

EQUAL TO WORLD'S BEST.

CHEESE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday

Confidence in the future of the butter market in Britain, but doubts regarding cheese, were expressed by Mr. A. 15. Washer, who has returned" to Xew Plymouth after an extensive tour in Britnin.

Men who had been extensively engaged in the business for half a century sj>oko in appreciative terms of the quality of New Zealand butter, he said, and were of the opinion that so long as the present standard was maintained tinindustry had nothing to fear, not even from Denmark. It was only the conservctism of the people of the north r,( Knglnnd that kept Danish butter i:i its present position; it certainly was not due to the fact that it was "superior t<> that of New Zealand. In the smith of England very little Danish mitter ivn« sold compared wi'.h New Zealand.

The position in respect of New Zealand cheese, however, was not so encouraging, Mr. Washer said. He had soon New Zealand cheese displayed in largo stores, and oliserved tluit after it had been cut for a while it was not at all attractive in comparison with other cheeses.

Wγ. Washer has formed bis own opinion in this connection, and says he feels convinced that New Zealand is using too much Jersey milk in its cheese manufacture.

The wheat subsidy which had been paid to the English farmer had been discontinued, said Mr. Washer, and 1 farmers who had engaged extensively in wheat growing in the past were looking for other channels. Many were going in extensively for butter and chewe making. They were specialising in small cheeses weighing 41b to 51b and this was growing rapidly in popularity, and would be a formidable competitor with the New Zealand article, which was hie reason for emphasising the vital necessity oi continually ing for the highest quality.
