RENOVATION.
THE TRADES HALL.
MAJORITY IN FAVOUR
TRUSTEE TO BE CONSULTED. The major schemes which have been advanced for the establishment of new headquarters for the industrial Labour movement are not likely to come to fruition, as it appears that the majority of the union secretaries with quarters in the present Trades Hall in Hobson Street favour the renovation of the existing building on modern lines. It was stated this morning that nine secretaries favouring the remodelling scheme had actually written to one of the Trades Hall trustees, Mr. E. J. Phelan, requesting that he should meet the'm this week in order that their ideas on the subject might be placed.-before him. It appears that the scheme to remodel the present hall will conform with the ideas of the trustees, who are not enamoured with the idea of launching out on large expenditure for the erection of new premises on a site at the corner of Welleslev and Elliott Streets, or for the acquiring of the Pacific Buildings at the corner of Queen and Wellesley Streets. The trustees, however, intimated in a recent questionnaire to the unions that they were willing to sell the Hobson Street premises and, after liquidating a mortgage of approxi-' matelv £4000, devote the balance towards the erection or purchase of a new hall on a more central site. The questionnaire seeking an opinion on the line of action, which should be followed has to be returned by next Saturday to tlie trust secretary. Mr. A. Rosscr, ' but the conference with Mr. Phelan is scheduled to be held prior to that.
