Asked whether he considered this' legislation would succeed in its purpose, Mr. French declined to express an opinion. "It is a domestic matter, and vou must work out your own salvation,'' he said. "An experiment is a gamble. If this works out, everyone will naturally be pleased. If it doesn t, well, it will be tough." Mr. French, who was born in Christchurch. has been in Australia for more than 50 years.
