ENGLISH BEACHES.

BATHING DANGERS.

CORONER CENSURES AUTHORITIES,

(Special.—By Air Mail.)

LONDON, August 8.

Those who are accustomed to the wonderful, Ivelborganised rescue arrangements on Australian and New Zealand beaches will find it difficult to realise the haphazard methods at the English bathing resorts. This is what a coroner said this week at an inquest at Rhyl, most popular of North Wales resorts, on a man who was drowned while trying to rescue a girl swimmer: "Local authorities of seaside resorts advertise extensively to attract thousands of visitors. It is their bounden duty to do everything possible to safeguard bathers. My remarks are strong, but it is my duty as a coroner to see that everything is done to safeguard life.

"It has been proved at this inquest that at the time of the accident, when the tide was running out, it was especially dangerous, and although it was stated that the Rhyl Urban Council employ two horse patrolmen to look aftef the sea bathers, they were not about at this particular point. It is the duty of ■the council to be constantly on the Watch for changes in the formation of their beach, and to take steps to inform the public. I am not satisfied that the Rhyl Council has done so."
