HARRIER CONTROL.

CONFERENCE HELD. VIEWS OF DELEGATES. The creation of independent bodies to control track and harrier activities was urged by Mr. S. Walterson, delegate for Wellington, at the annual New Zealand harriers' conference yesterday after he had discounted any suggestion of a breakaway movement. He said that it was not a radical departure, but they wished to confer some official status on the harrier sub-commit-tees. He said that the question of finance could be overcome by the payment of a separate affiliation fee for both the summer and winter sports in the case of those clubs which carried oil their activities throughout the year. The Canterbury delegates supported Wellington's views, but the delegates from West Coast (North Island), Hawke's Bay, Otago and Auckland stated that they were thoroughly satisfied with the present system of control. In the Auckland delegate's opinion the extra club affiliation fee would prove a burden on the harriers. The Wellington delegate's motion suggesting a change of control was lost.

The Wellington delegates also suggested that the marathon race at present held in Wellington should be recognised as a national championship, and the teams' event should be held on Labour Day. It was decided to support the Wellington body's suggestion. It was decided that the New Zealand Council should be asked to frame a special set of rules to cover cross-country and road racing. A request was received from the Canterbury centre that, owing to the fact that it would be celebrating its 50th anniversary o£ cross-country running next year, the centre would appreciate permission to stage the New Zealand crosscountry championship. The Hawke's Bay centre, whose turn it was to control the championship, did not oppose Caterbury's application, and it was decided that the southern province should be allocated the meeting for 1937.
