RAIN NO RESPECTOR.
Abandonment of Reception in Palace Gardens. ROYALTY INCONVENIENCED. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, July 22. The King held a reception yesterday afternoon in the grounds,of Buckingham Palace. Five hundred debutantes were to have been presented to His Majesty but rain interrupted the proceedings and many of them were disappointed.
About half the debutantes had curtseyed to the King, who was seated in a crimson and gold chair of State under an Indian durbar tent, when the rain fell heavily. The King left his chair, looked at the sky, and conferred with the Lord Chamberlain, the Earl of Cromer, who announced that His Majesty had ordered the abandonment of the reception. Thereupon, the queue of debutantes joined in a general rush for shelter.
The debutantes still hoped for an opportunity of being presented until the King and the Prime Minister, Mj\ Baldwin, came out of the Palace, looked at the heavy clouds and consulted. His Majesty and other Royal personages then went into the Palace again, but before the guests had entirely dispersed the sun was shining once more.
The Lord Chamberlain announced that the ladies who were not able to pass the King will be considered to have been officially presented. KING AND THE FORCES. COLONIAL REGIMENTAL POSTS. The King has consented to become Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal West African Frontier Force, Colonel-in-Chief King's African Rifles- and Colonel-in-Cliief of the Ceylon Defence Force.
