WOOLLEN PRICES.
SHARP RISE TO-DAY. EFFECT OF HIGHER COSTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A sharp, rise in the prices of woollen goods operates here from to-day, ranging from 5 to 7 per cent, according to the grades used, and directly attributable to the recent legislation. The increase in junior wages extends from 25 to 50 per cent, and with the introduction of _the 40-hour week in September it is stated woollen <ioods must be still dearer. An authoritative statement is that the industry cannot hope to react favourably to the extra charges. Anticipating the rise, the public has been buying freely during the past few days. Only stocks ordered by retailers after to-day will be affected by the increase.
