NEW FIRE ENGINE.

OHAKUNE PROPOSAL DECISION OF BOARD. 1 (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) RAETIHI, this day. A decision has been reached by the Ohakune Fire Board to purchase a new fire engine. In a report for the Local Government Loans Board regarding the board's proposal to borrow £500 011 overdraft for the purposes of acquiring a new engine, Mr. R. Girling-Buteher, inspector of fire brigades, stated that after a joint inspection had been made by the superintendent, Mr. Ross, of the Wanganui Brigade, and himself, a recommendation was made to the board that no improvement of the fire fighting conditions was possible with the present equipment, and that a high-speed engine would be necessary for effective operations. After giving careful consideration to the problem he was of the opinion that the most suitable machine for' the board's requirements was one fitted with a rear mounted 400 gallon pump and a positive type of vacuum pump at an estimated cost of £590 net. The board' resolved to purchase a pump and motor- as recommended by the inspector. It would not be necessary to increase the rates as the expenditure is to be met out of revenue spread over seven years.
