SCHOOL BEQUEST.
ESTATE OF £5000. FUND FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. GIFTS TO ANGLICAN CHURCH. A substantial bequest to the board of governors of the Whangarei High School for the establishment of scholarships at the school is made in the will of the late Mrs. Mary Jane McLaelilan, widow, formerly of Whangarei and Auckland. Mrs. McLachlan's estate has been sworn for probate purposes at £5000. The testatrix instructs her trustees to realise her assets and pay the proceeds to the board of governors of the High School, which, from the revenue produced from their investment, shall establish scholarships of a value of £70 each, to be known as "The McLachlan Scholarships."
The scholarships will be open to girls and boys under the age of 14, who for the previous six months have attended schools ten miles from Whangarei. The nature of the examination which shall he set for the scholarships is explained by the testatrix, and also a provision that the candidates shall satisfy the board as to their personal fitness for secondary school work. Bequests to St. Matthew's Church and the Church of England, in Auckland, are contained in the will of the late Mrs. Annie Braithwaite, widow, of Auckland. The sum of £200 is left to the vestry of -St. Matthew's as her contribution to the new organ fund of the church. After providing for personal legacies totalling £1750, the residue of the estate, which has been sworn at £5000, is left to the standing committee of the Diocese of Auckland. It is to be applied in equal amounts to Home Mission purposes and to the assistance of widows and orphans of Church of England clergymen.
