POLICE DEFENDED.
Accusers Absent from Inquiry In New South Wales. SYDNEY ROYAL COMMISSION. - SYDNEY, March 16. When the Royal Commission on, betting raids was opened to-day the two Labour members, Messrs. C. C. Lazzarini and D. Clyne, who made serious charges against the police in the Legislative Assembly, did not appear before the commission. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mackay, gave evidence in defence of police methods. He denied a statement made in Parliatnent to the effect that if the police did not return with a carload of betting offenders they were looked upon unfavourably. He gave details of methods of checking the honesty of both parties in betting cases. Mr. Mackay said that as the result of spasmodic Departmental inquiries into the methods of the police some officers had been disrated, transferred or dismissed, as circumstances warranted. The commission adjourned till Monday next.
