PULLING UP.
FARMERS IN WAIKATO. HEALTHY RECOVERY SIGNS. Improvement in export prices or internal conditions of the country are quickly reflected in the paying propensities of tho fanners, and tho observation of a visitor to the Waikato Show may not be without Its cheering significance. The Aucklander happened to call at the office of the secretary, Mr. W. L. Ranstead, just prior to opening day, when the inward mail was being opened. The caller commented on the size of the mail, whereat Mr. Ranstead agreed and remarked that it was not only hefty in bulk, but also in cheques. ''Before you arrived," he continued, "I opened close on a dozen letters. Five of them contained cheques raaging from £2 to £4, being from members of this association who have been in arrears with their subscriptions up to four years. That is a healthy sign, you know." Mr. Ranstead said it was some evidence that Waikato farmers were in a better position than during the past four years. "It may be the price of butterfat," he continued, while still buey opening envelopes, from which more cheques were revealed. There was no need for further comment.
