DASHED TO DEATH.
FROM GRAFTON BRIDGE
YOUNG HOSPITAL PATIENT.
DIFFICUXT POLICE TASK.
Disappearing over the northern parapet of Graf ton Bridge at 11.45 last night, before two men could prevent him, David John Greenway, aged 22, a hospital inmate, clad only in pyjamas and a cardigan, was dashed to instant death in the black depths below. Deceased was a single man and lived at Buckland, near Pukekohe, with his father, Mr. .George M. Greenway. He was admitted to the hospital at 4.15 p.m. on Saturday last. About 11.30 last night he left his bed in the hospital ward and ran along to Grafton Bridge. Two men, Mr. Wihiam Hallowell and Mr. William Hill, who were walking across the bridge, saw Greenway climb the parapet and disappear before they could get near him.
The police were quickly communicated with and a search for the young man was carried out with difficulty, owing to the squally conditons and the slippery nature of the paths in the gully. It wae almost an hour before Constable Hotham located the body. Mr. Greenway had received multiple head and other grave injuries, and death must have been instantaneous.
An inquest was opened before Mr. Wyvdrn Wilson, S.M., this afternoon, and adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been taken.
