NATIONAL COUNCIL.

SOCIAL AFTERNOON HELD. A social afternoon was held by the associate branch of the National Council of Women in the council's room yesterday, Mrs. E. R. Turner presiding. Songs anil elocutionary items were given by Miss Edna Craig, assisted by Airs. Ncllo Porter and Mrs. Allan. A mock election contested between Miss E. Newton, representing complementary dual representation; Mrs. M. Drcaver, representing women's interests; and Mrs. G. Pickett, representing peace and freedom, created much interest and resulted in the lastnamed topping the poll. An appeal, written by the Empress of Abyssinia to all British women, was read by Mrs. G. Pickett. A prize for a treasure hunt was won by Mrs. North. Mrs. E. Gibson; a pioneer member of tho National Council, was present and announced that she was presenting to tho council, through the president of the associate branch, a photograph of the first members of the executive of the council. In giving a brief history of the council Mrs. Gibson said that it had begun in 1898 and in those day* <net once a year in the larger cities. It was in 1914 that it was brought to the standard which it maintains to-day. Afternoon tea was served later in the afternoon.
