ANNUAL MEETING.

HOSPITAL AUXILIARY,

At the annual meeting of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, held in the I'enwompn's Club rooms yesterday afternoon, the president, Mrs. E. A. Kidd, made an earnest appeal to members to make a vigorous effort to bring new members into the auxiliary. Mrs. Kidd said new members and helpers were essential if the work of assisting relief of distress- were not to lapse. She also spoke of the difficulties that had had to bo faced during the past year, and thanked members for their support. The patroness, Mrs. E. Davis, presided. The reports from the various committees, which were presented in the annual report, proved that a very happy and interesting year's work liatl been done. The city sewing circle reported that they had bought and distributed material and cut-out garments; of these, 506 garments had been made by the Women's Institutes from the material supplied; 112 by the Reintiera school girls and other friends; and 128 by the hospital nurses. In addition the Women's Institutes had donated 250 garments. Assistance had been given by the depot to 984 families during the year, 5400 garments had been distributed and 230 patients had been assisted by orders for extra food. The calls on the depot had been so numerous that for a fortnight in July the stocks were quite depleted, and the depot had to be closed until they were replenished. Donations from the Mount Albert Women's Welfare Auxiliary, the Victoria League, the Lyceum Club, the Northcote Women's Progressive Association, and the Birkenhead Women's Association were acknowledged.

Tho valuable assistance given by thol investigation committee was also men-] tioned. This committee reports needy families and prevents overlapping. Extra nourishment and clothes had been given to many tuberculosis patients, and warm clothing had been provided for patignts going away to sanatoriums. The results of the election of officers were: Patroness, the Mavoress, Mrs. Ernest Davis; president, Mrs. E. A. Kidd; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. W. Averill, J. J. O'Brien, C. E. Maguire, J. W. Craven, Kenneth Gordon, and T. J. G. NollI; lion, treasurer, Mrs. A. D. Campbell; lion, auditor, Miss A. H. G. Bastcn; associate members, Mrs. A. C. Webster, Major Gordon, Dr. Buckley Turkington, Dr. Elaine Gurr, Dr. Gladys Montgomery, Adjutant Hart, Miss Nutscy and Miss Rudd.

During the afternoon a Very interesting address on "Peace" was given by Mrß. Kenneth Gordon. Tho speaker said it was very appropriate that she should bo delivering an address on this subject to such an organisation, for the Hospital Auxiliary could be said to be a League of Nations Union in miniature, because its one aim was tho welfare of mankind. Mrs. Gordon emphasised the importance of the co-operation not only of nations, but of individuals in helping on the League's work. We in New Zealand, she said, should give our direct support to tho League, because Now Zealand was onp of the signatories to the League, not asi subsidiary to Britain, but as a nation in Jicr own right. "We are dealing with effects instead of with causes," said Mrs. Gordon. "We intend to look upon peace merely afe a negation of war, whereas in reality it is a definite, positive thing, a crusade in which each one must help, and help now." The only basis for universal peace, the speaker contended, was an object in common, and that object must be tb" welfare of mankind.
