SWITZERLAND.
TALK AX ROUND TABLE CLUB. At a recent meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Business and Professional W omen s Round Table Club Miss Arawa Heron, the president, occupied the chair, and Mr. Blau, the Consul for Switzerland, was the speaker. The subject was a general talk on Switzerland. In the course of his address, Mr. Blau stated that Switzerland was composed of 22 cantons, each with a different system of taxes and each with its own legislation. There have been attempts to alter the Constitution, but the old system lias stood. Education in Switzerland was free, with equal chances for each child. The children were compelled to attend public schools for nine years— generally from OA or 7 years to 15 years. In the early stages all-round tuition ;.3 given, and later girls have one afternoon a week for cooking and sewing. Women in Switzerland had not tilt? standing that they had in New Zealand. It was considered that their place was in the home rather than in public life. The women had not the power of voting land took no interest in politics.
