MILK IN SCHOOLS.
HALF A PINT EACH.
COUNCIL NEGOTIATIONS.
COMMITTEE APPOINTED.
Reporting to a meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening on the proposal to distribute half a pint a day to children in schools, Mr. B. Martin, deputy-Mayor, stated that the producers would supply milk for the purpose at Sd a gallon. There were in the city area 9194 children at the public schools, 2300 at Roman Catholic schools and 253 at kindergartens. The sub-committee had asked the Minister of Finance -what were the Government's proposals.
Mr. Martin said that a reply had been received from the Minister stating that the details of the scheme had not been completed. H© believed that a concrete proposal would be placed before the next meeting of the council. The people were agreed that the children should receive a quantity of milk daily. There was malnutrition and supplementary food was required. Mr. H. P. Burton said that the muchmaligned Milk Council had investigated the matter fully and was entitled to full credit for its efforts. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. E. Davis, a sub-committee consisting of Mr. B. Martin, Mr. E. F. Andrews, who had previously been investigating the question, and Sir Geo. Richardson was appointed to continue negotiations, with power to co-opt Mr. G. Hutchison, chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council and Mr. A. C. Trousdale, a member of the council.
