OBITUARY.
MRS. H. W. M. KENDALL, R.R.C.
By the recent death of Mrs. H. W. M. Kendall, R.R.C, of Wellington, the wife of Dr. H. W. M. Kendall, the Dominion has lost one of its worthiest women citizens. The nursing world, in particular, reaped the reward of her vision and real interest in the welfare of others. Mrs. Kendall took her nursing training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the days when the transition to the new type of nursing was at its latest stages. She used to relate how difficult it was to refuse the small donations so frequently offered by the friends of patients in the hope of ensuring good care for them. With Miss Loch she was selected from many applicants for active service with the Army on the Indian frontier, Lord Roberts then being C'oniniaiidcr-in-Chief. For nursing under fire at Oghi she was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Indian Medal. She was also decorated with the Royal Red Cross before leaving India. She became deputy superintendent of the A.N.S., and was in control of all the nursing service in Central India, where she lived for several years. She resigned to come to New Zealand to marry Dr. Martindale Kendall, who had determined on pioneering in New Zealand. In Wellington her home became the rendezvous of a large circle of friends, many of whom will remember the kindness and hospitality, the friendly interest, and wise advice given so generously in her old home, "Hazara," so named from au advance post on the Indian frontier.
Her e'special interest was always in her own profession, and in 1905 when the first Trained Nurses' Association was suggested she became a moving spirit in it and wa/» its first president. Most of the earlier committee and annual general meetings were held at her house.
There is one son, Mr. Jack Kendall, of Whakarawa, Hawke's Bay, two daughters, Mrs. W. B. Fisher, of Waipukurau, and Mrs. R. Campbell Begg, of Lower Hutt, and eight grandchildren.
