AUCKLAND WINS.

TELEGRAPHIC CHESS.

AGREEMENT REACHED.

TO PLAY FOR BLEBISLOE CUP.

When the Auckland Chess Club concluded play in its telegraphic match against Wellington last Saturday only five of the 20 games were completed and the final result was a question of arrangement between the two captains. Failing agreement the games had. to be placed before the Christchurch adjudication committee.

When the boards were examined it was patent that Auckland had a decisive victory. The results of certain games were agreed upon by correspondence. In six cases decisions were arrived at giving Auckland a clear lead of two points, but Wellington sent nine diagrams which the captain of the team considered should go to adjudication. As it was clear to the Auckland adjudication committee that mo6t of the doubtful games could not be decided in favour of Wellington and at the best it would be a fifty-fifty decision, the Auckland captain telegraphed to Wellington last night offering draws in all the games where finality had not been reached. Acceptance would mean that Auckland would then have an aggregate of 11 points to Wellington's 0.

A telegram of acceptance was received this afternoon, Wellington offering Auckland hearty congratulations and best wishes for tlie Bledisfoe Cup final to be played next month. This is Auckland's first telegraph win for some years. Mr. A. W. Gyles was captain of the Wellington team and Mr. H. Oakley Browne Auckland's captain.

In tlie match as now decided Auckland had four wins and Wellington two. The other 14 games were draws. One point is given for a win and half a point for a draw. The Auckland winners were: D. I. Jones, I?. E. Bayertz, I. Burry, Dr. Short. Those who drew were: H. Addis, J. Buchan. W. H. Hughes, C. G. Lennard, G. Sale. H. Lees. D. G. Gallaher, E. King, F. R. Jeffreys, C. B. Newick, J. Adkins, R. Barker, Mrs. Short, H. Oakley Browne.

The play-off for the Bledisloe Cup will probably be against Christchureh. Last year it was between Wellington and Dunedin, the former winning.
