TONGARIRO IN FLOOD.
FISHING MAY BE IMPROVED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TUKANGI, Saturday. The long wished for rain started on Wednesday afternoon and, except for short intervals, continued until Friday night. In consequence the Tongariro has risen 7ft, and,is still rising. The road from National Park is in bad order, but prisoners are trying to repair
it sufficiently to let cars through. The Taupo Road is unsafe until' the river and creeks go down. Even if the rain ceased immediately the river cannot be fishable before Monday or Tuesday at the' earliest, but it would be much safer for intending visitors to telegraph Mr. Taylor for information, as, owing to the discoloration of the river before the rain, it may be a week before it is again normal. There is no doubt this flood will do a lot of good both in cleaning out the green weed, which was very bad, and also freshening the river fish. It is hoped that the fish started running on Wednesday night and got going before this huge volume of water came .down.
The Upper Waikato and Tongariro Anglers' Club has telegraphed to the district engineer suggesting that if at all possible he should come through and inspect the river while, it is in flood.
