DROUGHT BROKEN.
RAIN IN CANTERBURY.
SNOW IN BACK COUNTRY.
RECORD DRY SPEW, ENDED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHFJSTCHURCH, this day.
The drought broke in Canterbury last evening after the driest summer experienced for 40 years.
Very little rain had fallen since early in November, and the position of farmers had become desperate. Pasture land had been burnt up, crops had been ruined in many localities, and stock was famished.
Last night's rain set in strongly from the south-west and continued heavily overnight and to-day. With temperatures almost like winter, snow has fallen at the back of Waiau.
With the ground softened again many farmers were busily engaged ploughing to-day. The rain will do a lot of good, but it is questionable whether it will greatly relieve the feed shortage.
