NORTH SHORE'S BIG MARGIN.

Faced with the big task of scoring 430 to get a first innings advantage over North Shore on Eden Park's No. 2 wicket, Ponsonby were sadly at sea and were dismissed, after an hour and three-quarters' batting, for a poor 51. And this on a batsman's "wicket. It was unfortunate for Ponsonby that Townsend was unable to take the field owing to a leg injury, the side batting one short. Even- so it was expected that they would make a much better showing than they did. Luck was definitely against them at the start and the later batsmen were unable to retrieve the position. The side lost two good batsmen in Cleave and Stallworthy as the result of accurate throwing in to the wicket, and afterwards the bowlers ■were always on top. Only three batsmen reached double figures and the top score was Splendid bowling figures were returned by Emery, who kept a good length, spun the ball well ami made use of the cross breeze. In thirteen overs, ten of which were maidens, he took four wickets for 10 runs. The three other bowlers tried got one wicket each. • In their follow-on Ponsonby made a much better showing, Stallworthy, Snedden and Scholium each topping the half-century. Even so, the side had to battle hard to save an outright defeat, it being chiefly due to a good stand by Scholium and Cleverley that the tail was kept up. Edmonds,

the Shore wicket-keeper, had a profitable afternoon, catching four men ana stumping two. * " Scores:— NORTH SHORE. First innings 429 PONSONBr.—-First Innings.
