POOR BATTING.
Although everybody expected last vear's champions, Parnell, to defeat Y.M C \ they failed to reveal anything like their £">; batting form, and failed to overtake I.M.C.A.'s first innings total of 140 by 7 runs. This brought their first defeat this season. The match was marked by very slow batting by both teams, and it was hard to understand the tactics adopted by both sides, with such a perfect wicket prevailing both Saturdays. On the first day of the match only 197 runs were scored in five hours, while on Saturday the runs scored only reached 20S-
_The brightest knock of the day was provided by A. Scott, who scored all round in compiling 28, and if this player maintains his batting form he will have a good claiin for selection as wicketkeepcr for the Auckland team. Hay batted very patiently for 52, his effort being mainly responsible for Parnell getting anywhere near Y.M.C.A.'s' total. The bowling all through was very sound, and T. Lyon was in his best form in securing five Parnell wickets on Saturday for 52. Y.M.C.A. are moulding together a very strong side, and may prove a stumbling block to some of the better-fancied teams in the senior championship. The scores:— Y.M.C.A.
