MILLS' FINE INNINGS.

It was not the most Inspiring cricket that was witnessed on No. 3 wicket at Eden I'ark, when Eden batted from 1.35 p.m. to 0.30 p.m. to collect under 300 runs. 'Varsity the previous week had made 379 for nine wickets, and, of course, did not finish their innings, Eden taking strike on the commencement of the final day. At the afternoon tea adjournment Eden were only 331, and the opening pair, Mills and Tostlcs, were unseparated. But with plenty of time at their disposal and a string of aggressive batsmen left, it was assumed that Eden would go for the runs and endeavour to turn what looked like certain defeat into a first innings victory. But this was not to be, and the game, even at the conclusion, was reminiscent of batting practice. During the day only four wickets fell, and not at any stage did it look as if Eden were being troubled by 'Varsity's attack. Mills collected a grand total, although time did not worry him, and it was after six o'clock before he was dismissed. Mills scored all round the wickets, but some of his prettiest shots were through slips, and time and time again he found an opening in that quarter. Postles batted for over three hours to collect 61. Bush bowled well in the early part of the game, but later was hit all over the ground. Garrard and Schnnuer divided bowling honours if the word "honours" may be used. Taking the game right through, Eden have only themselves to blame for not collecting the major points, although for the openinday of a five-day Test it would have been a wonderful start.
