TROUT BREEDING.
WANTED IN AUCKLAND.
ARTIFICIAL STOCKING.
The use of hatching boxes for the breeding of trout was discussed at last evening's meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. The president, Mr. F. E. McKenzie, .said that as the succes's of the society's hatching pools had been shown he did not see why a small totara hatching box should not be built on every good trout stream, and a fanner found to tend it. "If we could afford to buy 1,000,000 ova instead of (iOO.OOO a year we would start going ahead in real earnest," he said in giving the opinion that* some settlers on 1111stocked streams might be willing to contribute toward the cost of building the hatching boxes and buying the ova. The secretary, Mr. C. M. Gordon, said that he had recently been informed by Professor E. l'ercival, professor of biology at Canterbury University College, that research conducted during the past year had tended to show that in certain streams artificial stocking was not so necessary as was generally be lievcd. The professor, he said, had also expressed the view that the local society should not be in too great a hurry to establish a hatchery. The meeting decided to ask Professor Percival to make a further statement 011 the position, in view of the fact that he had previously urged intensive stocking of streams in tliQ Auckland district. The meeting also resolved to ask the Central Freshwater Research Committee that the services of Mr. D. F. Hobbs be made available as soon as possible in order to make a survey and general investigation of Auckland district streams.
