TRAPPING OPOSSUMS.
A lot has been said lately about the. methods used in opossum trapping. Last season on several occasion I accompanied an opossum trapper on his rounds to study conditions first hand, and there I witnessed the most revolting cruelty. It was sickening to see an opossum, after a night's bitterly cold rain, caught in a trap by one foot, drenched to the skin, tho foot raw and almost severed, except for the tough, sinew which etill held the suffering animal. What of those opossums that escape from the traps to endure untold agony as the result of leaving a foot or a set of toes behind in the trap? An equally torturing death, also, in many cases, awaits the offspring of the opossum, often found half frozen in the trap in the pouch of the female. Quite often these little animals, completely lacking fur, are thrown alive into the undergrowth, there to die a lingering death. ■ H.W.F.
