A Race Divided.

The Jervois Handicap

Owing to the acceptors exceeding the safety number the Jervois' Handicap has had to be divided, the first division forming the opening event and the second division the third race on the programme. The divisions will be treated as separate races, the totalisator being open on each of them. In the first division Rebel Star, who is at the head, has been a good performer in the south. Recently at Riccarton, after running third in the Papanui Handicap, six furlongs, he won the Gimcrack Handicap of similar distance on the next day, while later at South Canterbury he annexed the Rosewill Handicap, one mile and 35 yards, beating, among others, Grand Review and Silver Sight. He has galloped well since his arrival here and should again be hard to beat. West Tor's recent form has been good and he won at his last start over eight furlongs and a half at the Wanganui winter meeting. He has also to be considered. Alpinus has plenty of speed and ran a good race on the second day at Te Rapa. Red Rufus won a division of the Champion Hack Plate, one mile and a distance, at Wanganui recently and is sure to show up. Conference has won up to a mile in the Hawke's Bay district and was fourth at Tβ Eapa about a fortnight ago. Monanui won two races at Whangarei and looks greatly improved, though she is meeting a much stronger class to-morrow. Gay Rose was second at Te Rapa over six furlongs, but Bonny Gay, who won well over a mile at Whangarei, appeals more. Royal Secret. Tin' Lap and Allegretto look the best of the remainder. Those who may be most fancied are

WEST TOR REBEL STAR BONNY GAY. Greenlane Steeples. Only half a dozen figure in the Greenlane Steeples. Tudor won so nicely at Te Rapa that he will be in strong request. Patutahi has previously won over the Ellerslie country and schooled pleasingly earlier in the week. Solanio is on the improve, while Carlaris shaped well over the steeplechase country on Tuesday. The favourites may • TUDOR PATUTAHI CAELARIS. The Second Division. Hunting Jay is at the top of the second division of the Jervois Handicap. In his last three starts he won over six furlongs at Waipukurau and Hastings and was placed on the other occasion. Sea Fox has previously raced jvell at Auckland, being placed twice on his last visit at Christmas time, while at the recent Egmont winter meeting he was beaten by a length by Matorni over seven furlongs, which was his last start. King Musk was second in the Nelson Handicap, one mile, to Lagoon at Ellerslie at Easter and third in the Whau Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale subsequently. He has been going along all right in the interim and should again race prominently. Con Fuoco has done nothing since he won a double (one mile and a mile and a quarter) .at Ellerslie at Christmas time. Versant won twice at Avondale in the spring, but hae nothing to his credit since. However, he has been working well and the best has not yet been seen of him. Adalene's latest form has been good, and she recently beat some smart hacks at Te Rapa. She should be in the money. United and Horowhenua have been doing good work, and after the latter's success at Avondale and Te Rapa he will not be neglected. Sir Val and Ballymoney were both placed at Te Rapa, while Record Flight won over six' furlongs jn maiden company there. Scarlet Rambler was successful over six furlongs in smart time at Riccarton in February and she ie a possibility. Engi, Gipsy Moth, Leo Colossus and Supreme Court may prove the best of those lower down. A preference may be shown for

KING MUSK ■ : ADALENE v rrf. <■•■ - yERSANT. The Penrose Hurdles. Eight Lave been ipaid up for in the Penbut they are not a high-class lot. Jayson raced well over hurdles last season and recently ran third in the May Hurdles at Wanganui. If he repeats that form to-morrow he should be hard to beat. Count Lendroff ran second in two hurdle events at the recent meeting at Te Rapa and he has been schooling well since his arrival here. Stanchion was third in the. Century Hurdles at Wanganui, while Valpeen ran third in a hurdle race at Te Rapa and on the second day was runner-up to Tudor in a hack steeplechase and later won the open steeplechase. Spalpiko is a good jumper and should account for the others, of -whom Tenakoe and Delrain look the best. Most money may go on COUNT LENDROEF JAYSON VALPEEN. The Big.Hurdles. A good field of twenty "has been paid up for in the Great Northern Hurdles, and it is one of the most open races of the day. Make Up, who won last year, has, only 31b more to carry and is sure to run a solid race. Hounslow has nothing to his credit since his triple victory over hurdles at the Grand National meeting, but has been working well and is on the improve. Prince of Orange, who arrived on Wednesday, looks in good order, but' when schooled yesterday morning did not impress. Billy Boy is a safe jumper, but may find the /company a"bit.too good-for him. Biform, ; Snow Prince and -Wee .Pat have all won /jumping events this season, arid of the •trio Wee.Pat's prospects appeal.most. Emancipation • dead-heated lor second in this race last year and .efaould ' again go „ well, as he is a fit horse.", Thespis won the Brighton Hurdle Uace in.follow style, but disappointed at Tβ-Eapa; -If he does his beet, he. has- a T chance,-'■ Gallamart has jumped exceptionally ~:welVeacli time'he has /been schooled frince his arrival here and is 'a possibility. 1 Mia Stella won well'at Te Rapa and'ie not witfiont prospects. Fahji has-- raced. pTombiently in /the- south., this |-. - ; -• -

season and he looks in great order for his engagement. He will have plenty of support. Cargen won twice at Whangarei and also scored at Te Eapa. He shapes like a good stayer and should be very troublesome. Catoma has done a solid preparation and is a reliable jumper. The going will suit him and his chances cannot be altogether overlooked. Gold Knight and A r al Watch look the best of the others. The principal fancies may be PAHU MAKE UP EMANCIPATION. The Chief Flat Handicap. Twenty have been accepted for in the Cornwall Handicap. View Halloo looks in splendid order for his engagement, arfd his track work since he arrived has been all that could be desired. He is sure to be well supported. Gay Broney has performed well over this distance this season, and he also looks in first-class order. He is sure to be in the picture if the going is not too heavy. Puss Moth has recently won three sprint races on end, and would only need to stay to be troublesome. Takekua has raced well up to a mile and three furlongs, but lie fell at his last start at Ellerslie, and has no reliable form since then. King's Archer is stated to be well forward, but ho will need firm going to show his best. Protomint and Prince Colossus, who are on the same mark, were both winners at Te Ra.pa, anad they have good prospects. linamint may be reserved for the Members' Handicap. Lord Val has been galloping well recently and was placed over a mile and a quarter last season. Of the others Caliente, who raced well at Te Rapa, when she finished second to Prince Colossus over a mile and a quarter, Mungatoon and Ruri appeal most. The public may go for * VIEW HALLOO GAY BRONEY CALIENTE. Hunt Club Hurdles. Mangu King is at the head of the Hunt Club Hurdles, and he went well in his two -steeplechase engagements at Te Rapa. Silent Bill was second in the Rangitikei Steeplechase recently and went well over hurdles at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Hauwai is a first-class jumper and has shaped well in his schooling since his arrival. Haakon, Royal England and Cordon look the best of the remainder. Those whose chances may be best fancied are SILENT BILL HAUWAI MANGU KING.

The Concluding Event. The day's programme will conclude with the Members' Handicap, in which a number of smart sprinters are engaged. Hunting Cry has not done much racing recently, but he looks well, as does Cadland. The latter has been galloping in good style at Ellerslie. Curie failed on his last visit here, but he went well in a gallop yesterday morning. Silver Streak is a first-class sprinter, and would only need to repeat his spring and summer form to bf very dangerous. Though Gay Sheila failed at Te Rapa she is likely to do a lot better tomorrow. ! She is stated to be very well. Golden Chant and Copyist, who are on the same mark, are good sprinters, but the latter has the, best credentials. King Ford, Greek Gold, Imaimint and Tradesman can ail run a smart six furlongs, and if started in this race Imamint should be very dangerous. .Chief Cook, Lack, Rereatu and Lagoon are the most likely of the others. The best backed may be - GAY SHEILA , IMAMINT COPYIST. The acceptances are:— 11.15—JERVOIS HANDICAP of £250. Seven furlongs.
