WINTER RACING SEASON
THE GREAT NORTHERN MEETING.
FIELDS FOR THE FIRST DAY.
RECENT FORM OF CANDIDATES REVIEWED.
The winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will open at Ellerslie to-morrow. Rain fell overnight and continued to-day, but if the weather clears the fixture should be a most successful one, for, with the exception of the Green Lane Steeplechase, excellent fields are engaged throughout. The principal event is the Great Northern Hurdle Race, and it has drawn a large and representative field, including horses from as far south as Oamaru. The Cornwall Handicap is the chief flat event, and another large field is carded for this race, the presence of several Southern horses lending added interest. The Great Northern Steeplechase will be decided on. Monday, The track, as the result of the rain, will be on the heavy side, but this is only to be expected at this time of the year. The old system of.betting, 75 per cent and 25 per cent, where the number of starters exceeds five, exclusive of brackets, will be in operation. , . . ,
