EARTHQUAKE-PROOF BUILDINGS.

Recent legislation imposes upon local authorities the duty of ensuring that future buildings are made earthquake-proof. Apparently, however, they have no control over existing Government buildings, and the Government is doing nothing to strengthen these. It must itself accept responsibility in this matter. There are Government brick buildings in which there are no steel frames and the bricks are not tied. A severe earthquake would cause these buildings to collapse like a pack of cards. Strengthening of the existing Government buildings, especially brick buildings, is an urgent necessity. To tackle the work now would find employment for many of the unemployed at standard wages. So what about it? GET A MOVE ON.
