Travellers reaching Calcutta from Tibet state thai there are reports in the capital, Lhasa, to the effect that the death of the ruler of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, last December, occurred in mysterious circumstances. As a sequel, a rich and influential Tibetan official, who was a grcaj favourite with the Dalai Lama, has been arrested, with his aged father. It is stated that the Dalai's illness was kept a very close secret. The arrested ollicial prevented anyone, even the highest ecclesiastical authorities, from seeing him.
