FIVE INCHES.
DOWNPOUR AT AKAROA.
HEAVIEST ON RECORD?
(By Teleprnph.—Press Association. , ) CHRISTCITURCH, Sunday. Throe inches of rnin foil at Akaroa in throe hours yesterday afternoon. The rain, which wne aceompnnied by lightning and thunder, was of unprecedented .violence. During the day ojin fell. Old residents of the township could not remember such heavy rain. All the creek* were swollen and roads were awash. Several parties of'c amenrnos , awash. Several parties of campers on Banks Peninsula had a very uncomfortable time, among them being a party of boys at a camp organised by the Y.MC..A. The damage done was not serious, although the unwonted rain will further jeopardise the cocksfoot harvest on the peninsula. The worst of the atorm was confined to Banks Peninsula, but the fringe of it parsed over Chriscthureh, where heavy rain fell. During the afternoon and until midnight very heavy rain fell in the city, and following this there were heavy showers for some hours. All sports events were postponed. The New Zealand tennis tournament is now two days behind schedule owing to rain, and it now seems improbable that it can be completed before Tuesday. To-day has been beautifully fine with a dWiiiT wind, m> that the courts may be playable early to-morrow. Last night they were under water. In the country an absence of wind m-'tigated damasre which might have been caused by "the storm. Crops will probably not have suffered any considerable damage. Whcatgrowere. however, have already suffered heavy loss from the unseafionable weather of the past fortnight. Many crops are down, and even dry weather will not rafce all of them. Some which were in the path of the hailstorm on Friday wore completely destroyed, and others so badly beaten down that they certainly will not wholly recover.
