RUMANIAN CRIME.
Premier's Death at Hands of Student. MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED. (Received 2.30 p.m.) BUCHAREST, January 1. The murder of Dr. Jon Duca, Premier of Rumania, who was shot by a student named Nicholas Constantinescu, has horrified the community, the authorities taking drastic action to prevent disorders. Constantinescu's two accomplices maintained a running revolver fight with the police until their ammunition was exhausted. The condition of the Deputy, SI. Costincscu, who was wounded by a bomb thrown by the assassin, is serious. The King has appointed as Premier Dr. Constantine Angelescu, the oldest member of the Ministry. Cabinet met to decide upon a course of action. Owing to influenza King Carol will not attend Dr. Duea's funeral. Dr. Angelescu is imploring the King to relieve him of office at the earliest opportunity. He appears to be unwilling to maintain a campaign against the Iron Guard, though he is not included i in the guard's death list. The leader of the Iron Guard, Cordreanu, of which the assassin is said to be a member, lias disappeared, but the acting-head, ex>General Cantanuzino, has been arrested.
Some believe tlie Iron Guard is antiSemitic and is financed by German Nazis; also tliat Dr. Duca was doomed because he was a supporter of the Little Entente and friendship with France.
The Government has proclaimed martial law, newspapers are being censored and strict discipine has been established in the universities. Public employees sympathetic with the terrorists have been dismissed.
