CHESS CONGRESS.
PROGRESS OF TOURNEY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Monday. The New Zealand cliess congress was continued on Saturday and to-day. In the fifth round Hicks and Selling played a draw, the game ending on the 55tii move. The game between Scott and Severne (Ruy Lopez) also ended in a draw. Results in the sixth round were: — Smith v. Hicks—Ruy Lopez: In defending a pawn Smith made an oversight, which led to his loss of the game and he resigned on the 21st move. Kelling v. Scott. —Sicilian defence: Scott played very well at first and if Kelling had shown any carelessness Scott would, haye won. Scott resigned at the 35th move. Dunlop v. Didsbury.—French defence with exchange variation: Didsbury obtained a good development at first, but Dunlop's skilful manipulation of his pawns and attack on the king's side broke up the attack andn Didsbury resigned on the 41st move. Severne v. Pihl.—Four knights defence: Severne soon, obtained the stronger position and later there was a general exchange of pieces and Severne eventually won on the 46th move. "VVatt v. Gyles.—Ruy Lopez: Gyles through an oversight lost a bishop. Watt played tlie end game well and forced Gyles' resignation on.the 49th move.
Jones v. Le Petit—Queen's gambit declined: After exchanges Jones played carefully and won on the 56th move. Results in the seventh round were:— Scott v. Smith. —Smith made an error with a pawn move and Scott subsequently sacrificed bishop for pawn, Smith resigning on the 20th move. Severne v. Gyles—Gyles adopted a Silician defence with the Paulsen variation and worked np an attack. Severne had the better of the end game and Gyles resigned on the 27th move. Pihl v. Kelling.—Queen's gambit declined: This game, after a great struggle, resolved itselr into an interesting end game. Kelling won the 54th move. Hicks v. Jones.—Retis opening: A very careful game. A draw was agreed to on the 41st move. Le Petit v. Dunlop.—Queen's pawn game: Dunlop won two pawns in the early stages. Le Petit played a great uphill game but resigned on the 52nd move. Didsbury v. Watt.—Mimzovitcli opening: In the middle game Watt took command and won on the 53rd move.
