COWES REGATTA.
KEEN SAILING CONTESTS. BIG HOLIDAY CROWD. The regatta promoted by the residents of Waiheke Passage and held each yew* off Cowes Bay was carried out yesterdry in Ideal holiday weather, and although there was a fiat calm until after 3,2 o'clock a steady northerly wii:u came in shortly after, when all sailing events we?e run off in good time, some of the finishes being very close and interesting, especially in the M and V class. There was a big attendance of visitors from Auckland and all over Waiheke, and over 00 boats were in the bay. The scow Kaliilii (Captain .T. McKeown) was flagship, tlie racing officials being:— Starter. Mr. E. Day; Judge, Mr. W. J. Oonnell; and time-keeper, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson. Results: — Keel Yachts.-—Dorothy (scr), lh 4Sm 30s; Valdora (scr), lh 53m 355; Tofua (30m), 2h Sm 30s. Corrected times places: Tofua 1, Dorothy 2, Valdora fi and N Class.—lvomuri (scr), 111 4Sm 15s; Mirage (Sm), lh 4Sm 325; Vavuua (sm), lli 49in 235: Cynara (scr), lh 50m 17s; Wayward (13m), 2h 5m 12s. On corrected times the placings were: Mirage 1, Yaruna 2, Komuri 3. 3. This was the race of tlie day. The Join Mac carried away its bolistay early in the race, but W. Clare's handling of the boat did not suffer and lie gained a good win. >1 and V Class.—Manu (scr). lh 50m 50s; Martha S. (sm), lh 57m 2s; Surprise (scr), 111 57m Ss ; Mawhiti (scr), lh 57m 84s; Mystic (scr), lh 58m Is. On corrected times the placings were: Martha S. 1, Manu 2, Surprise 3. This was a particularly fine race and with all extras drawing the four •boats crossed the line within a space of 60 seconds.
S Class.—Scimitar (scr). 2h 4m 265; Mistral (3ni), 2h Sin 21s; Waitoa (ISm), 2h 9in 235. On corrected times the placlngs were: Waitoa 1, Scimitar 2, Mistral 3. Motor Boat Race, over 9 knots. —Otahuhu (scr), lli 29m 503: I vena (sm), 3h 31m Us; Elvira (7m), Hi 30m 10s: Lady- Colleen (12m). Hi 52m 10s; Mnndalay (12in), lh 54m Is. Corrected times places: Elvira 1, Ivena 2. Otalniliu 3. Settlers' Launch Race.—Pikau (ltn), lh 5m 325, 1; Mann (scr), 111 5m 40s, 2; Sunbeam (7m), lh 14m 325, 3. Dinghy Sailing Race.—Mercia 1. Tiger 2. This race created much interest, owing to the fact that the veteran, W. Oliver, was sailing the Mercia, and his victory was exceedingly populhr. Dinghy Races, Rowing.—Girls, under 14 years: jnan Woollams 1, Lola Connell 2, Mary Holmden 3. Ladies: Miss Uenner 1, Miss Allen 2, Miss .Tean Connell 3. Boys, 14' years and under: G. M. Sellars 1, J. MclCinnon 2. Max Fisher 3. Men : S. Shaw 1, 11. Goodfellow 2, B. Rogers 3. Sculling.—E. Chamberlain "1, B. Stewart 2, L. Connell 3. In tlie evening a dance was held In Insley's Hall, when the prizes were presented bv W. J. Connell, who thanked all who had contributed to the prize fund, also the yachtsmen for their support.
