A Surprise.

Golden Eagle Again Fills Role of Runner-up. The programme opened with the Tamaki Handicap, for which Golden Eagle, Manna's Son and Kuini were most favoured. But there was a surprise in store, for the comparatively little - fancied Mountain Sun won and returned double figures on the. win machine. Gala Day soon established the lead, and, passing the stand, wae attended by Mountain Sun, Waskasu and Black Native. When they came round again Gala Day was about 50 yards clear of Mountain Sun, with Kuini and Golden Eagle next, the others being well out of it. Gala Day broke along tbe : back, and Mountain Sun took charge and led into the" straight from Gala Day, Kuini and Golden Eagle. Mountain Sun went on to win by a length and a half from Golden Eagle, who beat Kuini by two lengths. Gala Day was fourth, followed by Indolent and Manna's Son. A Favourite Scores. . The bracket, Anita Fame and Rare Key, was favourite for the Park Handicap, for which all started, while Tinokaha and Min Bells were next best backed. Jester went away fast, being followed by Pink Lady, Anita Fame and Kia Kaha, and passing the stands he was attended by Tinokaha, Pink Lady, Anita Fame, Kia Kaha and Min Bells. The order was the same along the back, and Jester still held his position at the home turn from Anita Fame, Kia Kaha, Pink Lady, Rare Rey and Our Summer. Anita Fame then took charge and won nicely by a length from Jester, who beat Kia Kaha by a length and a half. Pink Lady was fourth, followed by Rare- Rey, Tinokaha and Our Summer, with the others well back. Another to Takanini.

Enawah was the only withdrawal from the President's Handicap, and Great Parrish was sorted out as the best bet, with Kewpie's Guy and Jewel Pointer next in demand. Great Parrish was first to show out from Kewpie's Guy and Kewpie's Triumph, while Olive Nelson broke, and Auto Machine also tangled, tl'e latter being pulled up before the stands were reached owing to some of his gear breaking. Great Parrish was attended through the straight the first time by Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph, Jewel Pointer and Olive Neleon. When they came round again Great Parrish was still in command from Peter Pirate, Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph and Jewel Pointer, with Olive Nelson a fair distance back. Peter Pirate ran to the front along the- back from Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph, Jewel Pointer and Great Parrish. There was not much alteration at the turn, and Kewpie's Guy did best in the run home to beat Jewel Pointer, who finished fast, by two lengths. Kewpie's Triumph ■was a-length and a half away third, followed by Peter Pirate* Great Parrish and Olive Nelson.

Steeplechase Comedy. — Six Leaders Take Wrong Path. — Objection Upheld. (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, December 29. A horse which finished last won the United Services Steeplechase for amateur riders at" Newbury. There were seven starters. The numbers of the placed horses were signalled in the usual way. Then followed an objection by Sir Peter Lawson,. riding Bicester, who, as a result, was awarded the race on what critics describe as one of the most amazing objections in the history of . eteeplechaeing. The trouble was caused by the waterjump after the last fence, from which two tracks diverge in a'confusing manner. The eix leading horses took the wrong path. Sir Peter Lawson, who came last, successfully objected, and six were then placed in the order in which they passed the judge after they had returned to the proper course. The trainer of the horse that was originally placed first has appealed againet the stewards' decision.
