O. F. NELSON TRIAL.
WITHDRAWAL OF COUNSEL
MAU "BUDGET" EXHIBITED.
(By Radio. —Press Association.)
APIA, this day.
Owing to a difference of opinion between Olaf Frederick Nelson and Mr. Klinkmueller, counsel for accused, as to liow the case should be conducted, Mr. Klinkmueller to-day asked the permission of the Court to withdraw from the case. Nelson, who is charged in the High Court before the Chief Judge, Mr. J. H. Luxford, with breaches of the Samoan Seditious Organisations Regulations, will now conduct his own case. A further adjournment was granted until December 27. When the hearing was resumed yesterday, Inspector Braisby continued his evidence, and was still in the witness box when the Court adjourned at 3.30 p.m. Among the exhibits stated to have been seized at Nelson's residence was what was described as a Mau budget prepared and written by Nelson —a fact admitted by the defence. It contained the following items :--Receipts: Tax paid by natives, £2400; fines collected, £100; total, £2500, less amount retained for village committees, £500, leaving a total of £2000. Contributions received from -women's Mau, £100; "Samoan Uuavdian," £100. Total receipts, £2200. On the expenditure side: "Samoan Guardian," £500; chief secretary, £60; assistant secretary, £45; office stationery, £55; transport, £40; president, £100; eleven ministers, £200. Retainers: Tuimalealiifano, £100; faipules, £484; village secretaries, £132. Maintenance of capital, Vaimoso, £344. Total expenditure, £2000. Balance remaining, £200.
There is an error of £60 in the total expenditure, the items totalling £2060. These figures are as shown on the exhibits.
